The Michelle O’Neill Foundation to Benefit Children with Cancer and Special Needs Volleyball XXI Fundraiser – Laurelton Beach, Long Beach NY September 9, 2017

Dear Friends,

Fortunately, we at the Michelle O'Neill Foundation can say it again...."It was the best event ever!"  Volleyball XXI proved to be one of the most spectacular days in all respects...weather, attendance, energy and enthusiasm, and most certainly - donations!!!!  Strains of "Best Day" were heard over and over again as I spoke to many of our attendees.  For me, the opening ceremony is my favorite part and seeing the children with their hopeful and happy faces, although presenting the trophies at day's end closely follows with seeing the winners' smiles and hearing their shouts of triumph.

John Barnes, our tireless, talented and very funny MC, introduced Fr. Frank Shannon, Pastor of St. Mary's Star of the Sea located in Far Rockaway, who blessed all of us, including the children suffering from cancer, victims of the hurricane, our armed forces, and others.  John then asked us to pick a flag (among the 200 donated and hung by Jimmy Tolfree and volunteers) and we pledged; Molly O'Neill, my 13 year old great niece, sung God Bless America, and if we weren't already standing, everyone certainly would have. We were joined on stage with some of the courageous and adorable children the Foundation has helped through their journey towards recovery, namely Ciaran, Allie, Vincent, Brendan, and Danny.  Several other of our "kids" joined us throughout the day, including Dylan, James, and Ella.

Music was supplied by our loyal DJ, E. J. Weston, and he was joined mid afternoon by a visit from Jahstix who performed Reggae for us.  We owe a huge shout out and enormous thanks to Swingbelly's who fed our hundreds of participants with pulled pork sandwiches.  Our Hot Dog Wagon, donated by Anthony DiBartoli was manned by Gerry Snell, and Jane Blackburn and our wonderful loyal staff of volley-teers who sold hot dogs and cookies for the benefit of our "kids."

Smiley Wear merchandise was sold under the big tent and a wonderful raffle was held late afternoon, where Jet Blue tickets were awarded, a week in Rincon PR, surfboard, theatre tickets, bike, artwork, gift certificates to restaurants, salons, gyms & more.

Our T-shirt sponsors, court marker sponsors, Friends of the Foundation net banner sponsors and all our raffle benefactors exemplify the generosity, compassion and belief in the Foundation's mission which is to help the families of children who are suffering from this catastrophic disease and others with special needs.  We love and thank them with all our hearts.

We are so grateful for the help offered by the City of Long Beach, especially the Recreation, Police, Public Works and Sanitation Departments....and for the community of Long Beach.  I don't know if our fundraiser could be as successful as it is anywhere else.  We are truly blessed.

Our "Committee" consisting of Michelle's family and close friends kept everything moving in good order and with good cheer; we couldn't do it without them.  An extraordinary effort was made by Caryl Ann Niven, Jackie & Mike Walsh, Rick and Kristina O'Neill to memorialize their sister Michelle and to carry on her legacy of helping others.

I think our theme this year was carried out to perfection......CHOOSE HAPPY!!!!

With gratitude,

Carol O'Neill, President
