Volleyball XX was our biggest and best event ever! Thousands of players and spectators attended our volleyball tournament fundraiser to benefit children with cancer on Saturday, September 10, 2016 on Laurelton Boulevard Beach on a very sunny, energy-packed day. Attendees took our "Smile" theme to heart while playing volleyball, watching the games, purchasing raffle tickets and Smiley-wear merchandise while keeping in mind that they were there to help others and have fun!!!!
John Barnes, our MC, introduced Fr. Frank Shannon who blessed our 20th annual fundraiser and Molly O'Neill, followed with God Bless America while we faced the 200 American flags that lined the boardwalk. Swingbelly's fed our 2,000+ players, while our hot dog wagon sold 1,400 dogs raising donations to help Valeria achieve victory over her disease!!! Danny, Dylan, Amanda, Vincent, Brendan, Liam and Ella were there to express their gratitude to our donors for helping them in their journey of recovery.
The flavor of the music was reggae (one of Michelle's favorites), and Jahstix' performance was received with much enthusiasm from the crowd. EJ Weston, our DJ, played music throughout the day. There were 360 competitive and recreational teams, with Long Trunks winning the 4 man competitive and Tito's on the Rocks taking the trophy for 6 man competitive.
Undying love and thanks to our committee of volley-teers who sold smiley-wear merchandise under the big tent and roamed the beach selling raffle tickets, entertained the children with face painting and tattoos in the Kids' Tent, taking photographs, and supervising the volleyball games.
Special thanks to the City of Long Beach's Police, Recreational, Sanitation and Public Works Departments for supporting our mission and taking such good care of the Michelle O'Neill Foundations 20th anniversary fundraiser.
A very special thanks to Caryl Ann, Jackie, Mike & Rick for their key roles in making the event as spectacular as it was.
