The Michelle O’Neill Foundation to Benefit Children with Cancer and Special Needs Volleyball XXII

Fundraiser – Laurelton Beach, Long Beach NY September 8, 2018

Dear Friends,

The Michelle O’Neill Foundation to benefit children with cancer held its 22nd annual volleyball tournament fundraiser on Saturday, September 8th on Washington Boulevard Beach, Long Beach. I’m so happy to report that we can again say, “it was the best event ever!”

Initially, I was a little disappointed that we had early morning sprinkles. However, I needn’t have worried because the day turned out even better than I expected with lots of cloud cover and terrific beach conditions for volleyball. Our beaches looked more beautiful than ever with the newly dredged Washington beach allowing us to set up 3 rows of nets and 2 rows on Lafayette! Spectators had the ability to set up in between to view the games and socialize with their families, friends and neighbors.

The turnout was incredible with 410 registered competitive and recreational teams -- translating to 2,656 participants -- playing across 65 nets. The playoffs and finals were very exciting, with MJ vs. Lebron winning the 4 man competitive trophy, and Dig These Balls winning 6 man honors. Best team name was awarded to “Block You Like a Hurricane.”

Opening ceremony was spectacular beginning with MC John Barnes introducing Fr. Frank Shannon to bless the tournament, Molly O’Neill singing God Bless America against a background of 200 American flags donated by Jimmy Tolfree. I welcomed and greeted our donors, and introduced Danny, Paige & Peyton, Vincent, Viviana and Zoey, some of the children we’ve been able to help – with your help. I also thanked Rich Heiles, who donated all the nets, and our wonderful sponsors for continuing to believe in our mission. Continuous music was provided by EJ Weston, our DJ, and the Kids’ Tent was supervised by Christine Maflin. A big shout out was extended to our group of Committee members who work long and hard to make the day the success it was!!!!

Swingbelly’s prepared and served pulled pork sandwiches for our participants, while Jane Blackburn and Gerry Snell and their staff of volley-teers sold hot dogs for the benefit of our kids at the Hot Dog Wagon donated by Anthony DiBartoli.

Volleyball XXII was a labor of love, and my family and I will continue to work throughout the year on behalf of the “kids” we help – with your help. We look forward to our next fundraiser, Saturday, September 7, 2019!!! With gratitude
